I spent a long time working as a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Our ability to heal patients there amazed me, but I also realized that, with small lifestyle changes, many could avoid the ICU altogether. That realization motivated me to become an advanced practice registered nurse in primary care and nephrology. When a care plan I’ve created with a patient fits well into their daily life, I’m ecstatic. It’s a collaborative process. I’m not here to give them a rigid, “you have to do x, y, z.” I’m here for the patient, to put them at ease. My job is to use my education and resources to provide information, support, and answers so patients can make informed decisions about their health. When small changes lead to improvements, patients are surprised and motivated. That’s a wonderful reward.
